Reconstructing Unbundling

Despite the current global market turmoil, research unbundling remains firmly on the European regulatory agenda. The EU Commission launched a consultation paper to review ways to increase production, facilitate dissemination and improve the quality of research, particularly for SMEs.

While some are calling for a reversal of European policy, the industry continues its global trajectory of unbundling research from execution. Rather than roll back elements of MiFID II, the industry is re-evaluating research and execution as separate services; how these services are accessed; how the information is consumed and who is best placed to provide this information at the most effective price point.

Unbundling no longer equates to whether or not asset managers pay for research from their P&L, it represents a fundamental global shift in how data and the digitalisation of investments will revolutionise the asset management industry and those who can best service them in the Information Age.
